On August 21, 2010, Tropical Depression Six developed near the Cape Verde Islands, and on August 22 the system attained tropical storm status, and was named "Danielle". On August 23, Danielle was upgraded to a hurricane, becoming just the second hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season.
