Hurricane Ike is the ninth named storm, fifth hurricane and third major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. A tropical disturbance developed off the coast of Africa near the end of August. It tracked south of Cape Verde, and slowly developed, and on September 1, 2008 it became Tropical Storm Ike, initially located west of the Cape Verde islands. It was upgraded to a hurricane in the mid-afternoon hours of September 3.
